Well, I’m just going to go ahead and say, that this season doesn’t really look too hot. There’s a shitload of sequels, a few decent looking things and a lot of other shows that look completely stupid. Thank God forFate/Zerocoming back, orotherwise this season would really be a bomb.
1 – Fate/Zero
Synopsis – (Second part of Fate/Zero) The Holy Grail War continues on as the Servants and Masters begin to seriously do battle. One Servant, Assassin, has already been defeated, and Saber, Rider, and Lancer are now teaming up to defeat Caster.
Damn, it’s been a long wait for this show (especially with that hella annoying cliffhanger). Obviously, I’ll be continuing to watch this show, though I’m still kind of debating on whether or not I should call the next episode “Episode 14” or just start over at “Episode 1” of a new season. Although most places acknowledge this series as Fate/Zero 2, I think I’ll just go ahead and call the episodes 14, 15, and so on, because it’s not like it’s a new season two years after the first – it was already planned out like this. I assume this half of the series will be much more action oriented and will start to kill of the servants starting with Caster, even though I’ll miss that crazy son-of-a-bitch. Saber, Rider, and Lancer are going to beat Caster’s ass, Berserker will (hopefully) come back, and Archer sure as hell better team up with Kirei. It’s going to be awesome, let’s leave it at that. And this is returning just as Nisemonogatari will be ending it’s run, so I kind of lucked out on that one. I’m also kind of looking forward to going back and watching Fate/Stay Night after this series is over, and I really hope that it’ll be able to live up to this show, though with what everyone says about Shiro, may have a rough ride ahead.
2 – Tsuritama
Synopsis – Yuki Sanada is a high school boy who cannot communicate with people well and doesn’t have a single friend. He lives on Enoshima island with his French grandmother. One day, he meets a boy named Haru. Haru calls himself an alien who visited the Earth for fishing. Another high school boy, Natsuki, and a mysterious Indian, Akira, join the two and the island becomes the center of the event which determines the fate of the world.
Well, this series is the Noitamina show for this season, so it’s safe to assume that this show will at least try to be good. Although, Guilty Crown hasn’t really set too much of a benchmark for this show to follow. The description is weird as hell, but it seems like it’ll be more of an artsy show with some kind of message, like Arakawa Under the Bridge, or something of that nature. I mean, Jesus – a Frenchman, an alien, and an Indian saving the earth? Well, I guess that’s an anime for you. Even the PV, with all of it’s happy go lucky music and lack of anything related to the plot, doesn’t really help to add much sense to everything that’s going on in this show. It’ll almost certainly be weird as all get out (based on this summary, I see no way it can’t be), but with weirdness often comes uniqueness, and hopefully it will be good too.
3 – Hyouka
Synopsis – Oreki Hotaro is a high school boy, who always acts passively. One day, he enters the Classic Literature Club as recommended by his elder sister. There he meets Chitanda Eru, Fukube Satoshi, and Ibara Mayaka. Chitanda is a calm beautiful girl but she turns into an embodiment of curiosity. Fukube is a smiling boy who excels in memory, but he never constructs his own deduction. Ibara is a short girl and is strict with others and herself. She loves Fukube, but he always dodges her approach. They begin to investigate a case that occurred 33 years ago. Hints of the mystery is buried in an old collection of works of the former members of the Classic Literature Club.
So, unfortunately I’m already to the point where I’m basing things off studios. This series is done by Kyoto Animation, who’ve done shows like Clannad, Nichijou, and Haruhi Suzumiya. However, they’ve also done Lucky Star and K-on, so this could really go either way in terms of presentation and directing. Kyoto shows usually look very good, but they’ve been really focused on the moe-blob blandness of K-on recently, so some of that my slip into this show. It seems as if it’s some type of mystery story which always could be interesting, but we’ll just have to wait and see if the director and studio try to comedy it up a bit too much.
4 – Medaka Box
Synopsis – Kurokami Medaka, a first year, is elected as Student Council President, and the first thing she does is establish a suggestion box, later dubbed by students the “Medaka Box”. Medaka encourages students to submit any problem to the box without hesitation and promises to take on any issue from anyone. Now the Student Council members spend their days solving the problems submitted through the Medaka Box, whether they be hooligans in clubs where they don’t belong, girls who need help writing love letters or people who’ve lost their pets, gradually earning the respect and admiration of the entire school.
There are two reasons that I want to like this show: first, it’s produced by Gainax, the anime studio of anime studios, and second, the original manga is by Nisio Isin. However, form what I’ve read of the manga, it isn’t anything terribly special. Sure, the dialogue is somewhat better than most everything else out there (that’s what Isin does after all), but it’s still a pretty standard “fix peoples problems” series, with the only real interesting thing about the manga being how ridiculous Medaka is. Maybe that’ll be fun to see, espically being animated by Gainax, but other than that, I don’t see it being too amazing.
Synopsis – (second season of Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?) Aikawa Ayumu is a normal high school boy. One day he is killed by a serial killer and revived as a zombie by a necromancer named Eucliwood Hellscythe. He starts to serve Eu as her guard but he happens to deprive the mahou shoujo Haruna of her magic power. Haruna orders Ayumu to fight against the anti-mahou shoujo system “Megalo” in her place.
Okay, so the first season of this show, in terms of being a completely ridiculous anime self-parody, was pretty decent. The further it went on, the more and more it became like a standard harem show, which was disapointing. I still see no reason why Maelstrom or whatever her name was even brought into the show at all, and now it looks like even more girls are being brought into the mix. Look, even if you’re parodying it, just leave it alone, four is plenty. I guess this season is going to be like some big-ass parody of High School of the Dead or something, because they’re in school uniforms and, you know, the “Of the Dead” suffix.
6 – Accel World
Synopsis – One autumn day in 2046, Haruyuki has an encounter with Kuroyukihime, the prettiest girl in his school. For the middle school boy who is often bullied, the meeting changes his life. Through a mysterious piece of software from her, Haruyuki learns of the existence of the virtual Accel World. In that moment, the lowest of the “school caste” becomes “Burst Linker”, a knight defending a princess.
So, we’ve got a .hack/Baldr Force look-a-like with a fat main character, which seems to have everybody in the internet up in arms. Everyone really seems to be behind this fat protagonist, I guess because fat people are honestly never the main characters of anime. I don’t really see how it makes a difference that he’s fat or anything – instead of being a loser because he’s a loser, he’s a loser because he’s fat. Either way, if you look up any type of PV of this on Youtube, the top two comments are almost guaranteed to be about him being fat. He’s going to be skinny by the end anyway, so what’s the difference? Other than that, it looks like a pretty standard shounen type show, but virtual world type things always have the potential to be interesting, since you can do pretty much whatever you want with it.
Synopsis – In the beginning of the 21st century, a world war breaks out over interplanetary travel tech. The environment is pretty much destroyed so mankind leaves Earth and starts Star Calendar 00. Entertainment and songs become heavily regulated and eventually banned due to their power to move people, but a brave idol group puts on guerrilla performances in the name of a famous act from earlier times that sang to Earth’s bitter end, AKB48. The illegal revival group’s name is… AKB0048.
Yes, I put this on here because it’s just that fucking stupid. Seriously, the Japanese are the absolute biggest money whores in the entire universe. No one else could write something this fucking retarded just to promote an idol group. And are there really this many people in the group, nine fucking people? Sure music has the power to influence people, but it sure as hell isn’t J-pop idol music that’s influencing anything other than a bunch of preteen girls and horny pedophiles to buy their shit and go to their shows so they can buy more shit while they’re there. I’m sorry, but I just really hate fucking J-pop, and I really fucking hate such blatant marketing ploys. This is going to be terrible and anyone in their right mind could tell that, but as long as it makes money, that’s what’s important. After all, isn’t that what K-on and iDOLM@STER have taught us over the years?
And that’s all she wrote, but like always, here’s one of those big-ass visual guide things.
Well, it’s finally getting colder, which means I can’t wear Chacos everywhere I go anymore. Anyway, we’re here to discuss the first anime season of 2012. Also, instead of me being all by my lonesome, this time I have a fellow anime blogger, Cholisose, with me. Below are a list of the shows that we either individually on collectively think will be worth watching.
1 – Kyousogiga
Synopsis – In a world where boundary between human and yokai worlds is no longer distinguishable, 3 different groups pursue for power. What is Count of Reality and Destruction of Negentrophy? Koto, a high school girl who got out of maze of Java Work, chases the shadow of “Kuro Usagi (Black Rabbit)”. This is a story surrounding various people chasing Kuro Usagi in Kyoto, where time has stopped.
Notaku – I’ve already done a post about this show (check it here) and I am very much looking forward to this show/movie, whatever it is. Technically it’s an ONA, like the last three episodes of Bakemonogatari and the Hetalia series. I honestly have no idea what this is really about and the description doesn’t do much good at explaining itself, but that’s okay, cause’ dat animation. It’s supposedly based (veeeeery loosely I assume) on Lewis Carol’s Through the Looking Glass. Visually, it looks absolutely amazing so even if it’s story is really lame or stupid, I’ll still enjoy it just based on that.
Cholisose – So apparently this is a movie made for TV? Whatever the case may be, it looks pretty fantastic. Look at the trailer and watch the beautiful, crazy animation, and its wide variety of art styles… Certainly looks imaginative! People are comparing it to about twenty different anime, which may be apt since I can hardly figure out what this is meant to be about. It’s supposedly (extremely) loosely based on Lewis Carroll’s Alice stories, so yeah, definitely going to be checking this out. I love those books—and so do a lot of other people, since there are so many stories based on them. I have a feeling this will be either really awesome, or just really weird. Or, of course, both. At the very least, there will be a school girl whacking a giant mecha with a hammer.
2 – Nisemonogatari
Synopsis – This show is a sequel to Bakemonogatari. The black swindler Kaiki Deishu, who once deceived Senjougahara, returns to town and spreads the incantation which cursed Sengoku before. Araragi’s sisters Karen and Tsukihi try to capture Deishu but…
Notaku – Bakemonogatari = win, so I’ll just assume the transitive property applies here. Apparently, it’s about Araragi’s sisters (or at least that what the only image I could find for it looks like) and has something to do with the guy who put the snake curse on Sengoku. I can’t even explain how much I love the original series, which is one of my favorite anime of the past 3 or 4 years. You could say that it’s just a glorified harem show, but I don’t think that at all. The animation and artwork are amazing and I actually just loved the dialogue of the show, which is one of the rare times I would ever say something about dialogue in an anime. I know a lot of people don’t like the show because of how much dialogue, but to me, some of the most enjoyable scenes are nothing buy Araragi and Senjougahara talking. There is absolutely no way that I won’t watch this show.
3 – Another
Synopsis – 26 years ago, in a third-year classroom of a middle school, there was a student named Misaki. As an honors student who was also good at sports, the charming girl was popular with her classmates. When she suddenly died, her classmates decided to carry on as if she was still alive until graduation. Then, in the spring of 1998, a boy named Sakakibara Kouichi transfers to that classroom, and he grows suspicious of the fearful atmosphere in that classroom. In particular, there is a beautiful, aloof girl named Mei Misaki who wears an eyepatch and is always alone drawing pictures.
Cholisose – Mystery and horror—sign me up! And it’s starring Chihiro from Ef: Tale of Memories. Or at least a girl that looks a lot like her. =P The story’s based on a novel written in 2009, and there is a manga adaptation of it out there. I can’t find much more about it, so I’ll just have to wait and see how the first episode pans out in January. I’m itching for another good horror anime… >=]
Notaku – But really, this shows name makes it kind of hard to find any information about because you can’t just search “Another” or “Another anime” and come up with anything. I’ve never heard anything about this show, but I like weird, creepy horror stuff, so I figured I’d like this. That and there really isn’t a whole lot going on this season. It has an almost nonexistent Wikipedia page and no PV that I know of, so there really isn’t much I can say about it.
4 – Recorder to Randoseru
Synopsis – Miyagawa Atsushi is an 11-year-old boy. Since he is 180 centimeters tall and has a grown-up looking build, he has always been running into troubles. On the other hand, his 17-year-old elder sister Atsumi is only 137 centimeters tall and has a childish looking build. Atsumi takes good care of Atsushi, who acts his true age.
Cholisose – I’m going to go out on a limb and assume this will be a comedy series. It’s based on a four-panel manga, and the concept sounds quite amusing. The elementary school-aged boy incredulously looks like an adult, while the high school-aged older sister is a pipsqueak. It’s obvious what sort of gags will come from this kind of setup, but if the execution is sound it should be fun. I can’t find any scans of the manga online, so I can’t say anything much more. Not until the first episode airs, of course! I’m wondering if these will be little 5-minute episodes like Morita-san, or if they’ll be full-fledged episodes.
Synopsis – These young girls’ hearts are pure, and then violent! Mato Kuroi just got into junior high school, and on the first day, someone catches her eye; her classmate Yomi Takanashi. The two meet. The innocent and naive Mato. The mature Yomi. Seemingly opposites, but the time they spend together only strengthens a growing friendship. But as they go into their second year at the school, they get placed in separate classes, and they begin to grow apart. But somewhere simultaneously… In another world, a young girl, blue fire residing in her eyes, Black Rock Shooter faces another young girl; this one holding a jet-black scythe, Dead Master, and a battle to the death begins to unfold.
Notaku – Okay, look, I thought the original Black Rock Shooter was really really stupid. I mean, it’s an OVA based off a song. That’s stupid. I can’t remember anything about it either, other than that I wanted the stupid school girls to hurry up shut up so I could watch their fantasy counterparts duke it out in LSD land. The entire time I was thinking to myself how little sense the whole thing made, and how the two parts had absolutely nothing to do with each other. But if the creators are will to smoke some more pot and make some crazy fight scenes, I may watch it.
Synopsis – Natsume Yuujinchou is a light and cheerful anime adapted from the manga of the same name. Since he was young, a teenage boy named Natsume Takashi has been able to see spirits, but keeping this ability a secret has now become a heavy burden for him and has made his life difficult. This begins to change when Takashi inherits his grandmother’s “Book of Friends”. He discovers that she, Natsume Reiko, shared the same ability as him and starts to understand why he was always targeted by both good and bad spirits.
Cholisose – The fourth season of Natsume Yuujinchou! This is one of my favorite anime series ever, so it goes without saying I’ll be watching this. The first season was wonderful, the second season spectacular, and the third season even better than that. It’s one of the most unique shows out there, and the protagonist Natsume is one of the best examples of strong, gradual character development in anime. I’ll certainly be curious to see where the fourth season goes plotwise. There’s plenty of side characters who could return, including the elusive Seiji Matoba… What I would especially like though is to learn more about Natsume’s grandmother Reiko. Looking forward to it.
Notaku – I’ve only seen a few episodes of this show but if it has enough staying power to last four seasons, I’ll just go ahead and assume it’s pretty good. But if I watch this I’ll have to marathon the rest of the show because I don’t really like to watch direct sequels without seeing the original.
7 – Inu x Boku SS
Synopsis – The Shirakiin house’s daughter, Shirakiin Riricho, who has a complex about being unable to live independently and unprotected, feels the need to move out and live on her own under the condition of residing in the mansion named “Ayakashi Kan.” In this mansion, only those who have cleared a very strict examination could reside in it, and for each resident, they are accompanied with one agent of the Secret Service (S.S.). Although Riricho has rejected the company of the S.S., while residing in the mansion she finds out that the agent dedicated to protecting her is actually the Fox Spirit whom she previously rescued.
Cholisose– I’m more on the fence for this one, but it sounds like it could be fun. What is confusing me though is the genre for this anime. I’ve seen things like “comedy,” “mystery,” and “supernatural,” but not “romance.” The plot description screams romcom to me. (Maybe it’s just a given?). Browsing through the official site for this upcoming anime presented a variety of good-looking character designs, and the trailer reveals some decent animation. But will this be geared to the Black Butler crowd? I’m worried if that’s the case. It’s based off a manga, and browsing through the first chapter of it, it gives me a bit of a Tactics vibe, oddly enough… I’ll wait for the first episode to see how I feel about it.
8 – Kill Me Baby
Cholisose – This is based on a four-panel comic, and it looks cute and funny. It’s about a schoolgirl and her friend, who happens to be an assassin. And that’s the whole premise. Should be amusing. Not sure if this will be a five-minute show. I think it would work fine as one, though full-length episodes would be funnier, Azumanga Daioh-style.
Obviosly this is not the full line up of shows, so click here to view the full list.
Okay, Madoka Magica is really, really, overhyped, but it’s still a good show. I might not think as highly of it as everyone else seems to, but I still really enjoyed it. But good God, I never seen such a huge simultaneous orgasm in my entire life. When the world found out there would be a Madoka Magica film the end times began. Never before and my life have I seen /a/ flip their shit over something so much. And then everyone found out there are going to be three movies and all the semen in the world was simultaneously released… and then they found out about the first two. Yes, unfortunately, the first two movies will pretty much just be Madoka Magica: Air Communication part 1 and 2. Not until 2078 or whenever the third movie comes out will we see something new. The scripts for the movies have reportedly already been completed, and it’s supposedly already in the beginning stages of production. But, because they’re movies, it’ll be forever until we get to see them, so it’s not anything to get worked up over right now. But dammit Shaft, this better not screw up your production on Kizumonogatari and Nisemonogatari. I care about those infinitely more than I care about this trilogy.
So, is there any reason I’ve never heard of this before? Because it looks absolutely awesome. I mean, God, just watch the PV.
So, essentially, Lewis Carol adopted the bastard child of Bakemonogatari and FLCL. Fuckin’ A.
My God, I have not wanted to see something this much in a while. But, I’m the type of person who pretty much eats up anything artistically creative, and with this and Nisemonogatari coming soon, I’m pretty much on cloud 9. I can hardly believe this produced by Toei Animation, you know, the company that did stuff like Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon? Odd, but I don’t think the results lie.
The only problem is that I can find absolutely no information about this. There isn’t really much talk about it on forums, and the closest thing it has to a Wikipedia page is a footnote on “Through the Looking Glass”. I don’t even know if it’s a series or not (though I highly doubt such an elaborate PV would exist for a TV series). Well, whatever, everywhere I look it says, “Simulcast December 10” so it’ll definitely be on the internet soon, and that’s all I need to know.
So apparently Kenji Kamiyama, the director behind Eden of the East, and Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C., has been at work since making Paradise Lost.
Shortly after it’s release he created Xi Avant, a short film resembling Eden of the East, and started an advertising firm. But somehow in between all that he has begun a new anime project, yet to be named. On September 27, it was announced that he will personally be streaming the announcement of his new anime on October 4. It will be streamed live from the Shinjuku Wald 9 theater at 8:30 in Japan and will be simulcast in several other theaters throughout Japan, in addition to being streamed over the internet.
I, personally, and hoping for the 3rd Gig of S.A.C., but I know that probably won’t happen, but hey, maybe it’ll be something related to Xi Avant, but I guess I’ll just have to wait and see
Holy SHIT, YES!!!!!!!! Time to bust out some hallucinogenic drugs, and get ready to pause the video a lot, because Nisemonogatari will be creating visual orgasms in January of this year!!!!! I have absolutely no idea what this series is about, other than that it has to do with Araragi’s sisters I guess. I don’t know whether it’s a sequel, prequel, or spin-off, but I don’t care. After all, it IS Shaft, and it IS related to Bakemonogatri, so it’ll be awesome whether you want it to or not.
Of course seeing that it’s been almost 4 years since Bakemonogatari was aired in Japan my hopes of it ever being licensed continue to fade away. Yes, the the show is VERY Japanese, a lot of the humor and wordplay is lost in translation, and it’s really weird. However, based on it’s popularity, I think it’d sell just fine. But then again, maybe it’s popularity is the issue; it may be to expensive to get the rights to, and no one wants to take a risk on such an odd show. But who cares, Nisemonogatari exists and January can’t come soon enough.
The new anime season starts in October doods. I’m sort of glad, because I don’t have too many shows that I know I’m going to watch every week, besides Mawaru Penguindrum and No. 6, so hopefully I’ll find something in the new season I can really stick with too.
Yes, it’s the generic harem anime required by law for each season for the rest of eternity. Some generic guy is sent as a specially selected trial student at an all girls school that is beginning to combine with his old school. Shockingly he meets a bunch of girls there who, oddly, all don’t instantly want his penis, However, most other harem anime have claimed this to not be the case, as we all know that girls all crave dick.
Christ, people are all about some Guilty Crown for whatever reason, maybe because it sounds like a new Code Geass or something. For whatever reason people I know are going apeshit about this show, and the PV looks pretty damn good so I’ll check it out. Guilty Crown is a totalitarian government type thing that takes place in 2039, and follows Ouma Shu. He somehow gets involved with a resistance force that’s fighting the government, as is standard in totalitarian works.
Awesome, more Last Exile!… oh, it’s just a spin off. Yes, unfortunately this has absolutely nothing to do with Last Exile and is and all new story set in the same world. Well, it’s Last Exile, so we’ll all watch it anyway. This show is about a girl named Fam and her navigator Giselle, who were both made fun of so much for their names they stole a vanship and ran away. No, not really, but there isn’t really a whole lot of information about it, except that their vanship is named “Vespa”, so hopefully we’ll get to see some bass guitar head smashing.
Hells yes, grab some fsteak and get ready to talk about MURDERS! Oh, soooooo many Hiimdaisy jokes to make, but the time for that will come later. I’m sure most people have played P4, or have at least heard about it, as it’s one of the best games on one of the best systems ever, the PlayStation 2. Persona 4 is about “you” as you move to a new town to stay with your uncle while your parents are away. While there, a string of murders occur and you and your friends discover the means of the killing; a world inside the TV. So, because everyone knows that police fail at everything, you and your party set out to stop any more deaths.
Is this show really that popular? How can you even have a third season? There were two seasons, OVAs, a movie, and now a THIRD season? What else is there? Yuji picked Shana, that’s the end, Yoshida loses and has to settle for Ike. Right? Lord, I don’t know, I can’t even find any information on the plot of this, but I’ll have to watch it just to see what bullshit they can make up to squeeze more life out of this series. Shana, you are no Evangelion.
I’ve never watched all of Fate/stay night, and people claim I deserve to die because of this. However, I’ve also heard people say that it’s really overrated, so I just never took the time to finish it. Fate/Zero is prequel to Fate/stay night and is supposed to show what happened in the 4th Holy Grail War that made all that shit happen to Shirou.
Obviously, these aren’t all the anime that will be released in the fall season, just the ones that I’ve heard about that seemed noteworthy.
FINALLY, Dear God, thought shaft had forgotten us. So in approximately one week the last two episodes of Mahou Shoujo Madoka, or Puella Magi Madoka Magica, or Magic Mage Magical Madoka Magicka Magi, or whatever the hell else you want to call it, will finally air on April 21. Holy St. Peter, I’m ready for this shit, and honestly want to punch Shaft in the face for making me wait for more Kyubey 1337n3ss.
Predictions: I’ve got money on this, Madoka makes some wish to sacrifice herself and save everyone, because she’s like that.
Everything happens like in the flashback, and the end starts Homura’s cycle all over again
