Winter 2012 Anime Guide

Well, it’s finally getting colder, which means I can’t wear Chacos everywhere I go anymore.  Anyway, we’re here to discuss the first anime season of 2012.  Also, instead of me being all by my lonesome, this time I have a fellow anime blogger, Cholisose, with me.  Below are a list of the shows that we either individually on collectively think will be worth watching.

1 – Kyousogiga

Synopsis – In a world where boundary between human and yokai worlds is no longer distinguishable, 3 different groups pursue for power. What is Count of Reality and Destruction of Negentrophy? Koto, a high school girl who got out of maze of Java Work, chases the shadow of “Kuro Usagi (Black Rabbit)”. This is a story surrounding various people chasing Kuro Usagi in Kyoto, where time has stopped.

Notaku – I’ve already done a post about this show (check it here) and I am very much looking forward to this show/movie, whatever it is.  Technically it’s an ONA, like the last three episodes of Bakemonogatari and the Hetalia series.  I honestly have no idea what this is really about and the description doesn’t do much good at explaining itself, but that’s okay, cause’ dat animation.  It’s supposedly based (veeeeery loosely I assume) on Lewis Carol’s Through the Looking Glass.  Visually, it looks absolutely amazing so even if it’s story is really lame or stupid, I’ll still enjoy it just based on that.

Cholisose – So apparently this is a movie made for TV? Whatever the case may be, it looks pretty fantastic. Look at the trailer and watch the beautiful, crazy animation, and its wide variety of art styles… Certainly looks imaginative!  People are comparing it to about twenty different anime, which may be apt since I can hardly figure out what this is meant to be about.  It’s supposedly (extremely) loosely based on Lewis Carroll’s Alice stories, so yeah, definitely going to be checking this out.  I love those books—and so do a lot of other people, since there are so many stories based on them.  I have a feeling this will be either really awesome, or just really weird. Or, of course, both. At the very least, there will be a school girl whacking a giant mecha with a hammer.

2 – Nisemonogatari

Synopsis This show is a sequel to Bakemonogatari. The black swindler Kaiki Deishu, who once deceived Senjougahara, returns to town and spreads the incantation which cursed Sengoku before.  Araragi’s sisters Karen and Tsukihi try to capture Deishu but…

Notaku – Bakemonogatari = win, so I’ll just assume the transitive property applies here.  Apparently, it’s about Araragi’s sisters (or at least that what the only image I could find for it looks like) and has something to do with the guy who put the snake curse on Sengoku.  I can’t even explain how much I love the original series, which is one of my favorite anime of the past 3 or 4 years.  You could say that it’s just a glorified harem show, but I don’t think that at all.  The animation and artwork are amazing and  I actually just loved the dialogue of the show, which is one of the rare times I would ever say something about dialogue in an anime.  I know a lot of people don’t like the show because of how much dialogue, but to me, some of the most enjoyable scenes are nothing buy Araragi and Senjougahara talking.  There is absolutely no way that I won’t watch this show.

3 – Another

Synopsis – 26 years ago, in a third-year classroom of a middle school, there was a student named Misaki. As an honors student who was also good at sports, the charming girl was popular with her classmates. When she suddenly died, her classmates decided to carry on as if she was still alive until graduation. Then, in the spring of 1998, a boy named Sakakibara Kouichi transfers to that classroom, and he grows suspicious of the fearful atmosphere in that classroom. In particular, there is a beautiful, aloof girl named Mei Misaki who wears an eyepatch and is always alone drawing pictures.

Cholisose – Mystery and horror—sign me up! And it’s starring Chihiro from Ef: Tale of Memories. Or at least a girl that looks a lot like her. =P  The story’s based on a novel written in 2009, and there is a manga adaptation of it out there. I can’t find much more about it, so I’ll just have to wait and see how the first episode pans out in January.  I’m itching for another good horror anime… >=]

Notaku –  But really, this shows name makes it kind of hard to find any information about because you can’t just search “Another” or “Another anime” and come up with anything.  I’ve never heard anything about this show, but I like weird, creepy horror stuff, so I figured I’d like this.  That and there really isn’t a whole lot going on this season.  It has an almost nonexistent Wikipedia page and no PV that I know of, so there really isn’t much I can say about it.

4 – Recorder to Randoseru

No PV available

Synopsis – Miyagawa Atsushi is an 11-year-old boy. Since he is 180 centimeters tall and has a grown-up looking build, he has always been running into troubles. On the other hand, his 17-year-old elder sister Atsumi is only 137 centimeters tall and has a childish looking build. Atsumi takes good care of Atsushi, who acts his true age.

Cholisose – I’m going to go out on a limb and assume this will be a comedy series.  It’s based on a four-panel manga, and the concept sounds quite amusing.  The elementary school-aged boy incredulously looks like an adult, while the high school-aged older sister is a pipsqueak.  It’s obvious what sort of gags will come from this kind of setup, but if the execution is sound it should be fun.  I can’t find any scans of the manga online, so I can’t say anything much more.  Not until the first episode airs, of course! I’m wondering if these will be little 5-minute episodes like Morita-san, or if they’ll be full-fledged episodes.

5 – Black Rock Shooter

Synopsis – These young girls’ hearts are pure, and then violent!  Mato Kuroi just got into junior high school, and on the first day, someone catches her eye; her classmate Yomi Takanashi. The two meet.  The innocent and naive Mato. The mature Yomi. Seemingly opposites, but the time they spend together only strengthens a growing friendship.  But as they go into their second year at the school, they get placed in separate classes, and they begin to grow apart.  But somewhere simultaneously…  In another world, a young girl, blue fire residing in her eyes, Black Rock Shooter faces another young girl; this one holding a jet-black scythe, Dead Master, and a battle to the death begins to unfold.

Notaku – Okay, look, I thought the original Black Rock Shooter was really really stupid.  I mean, it’s an OVA based off a song.  That’s stupid.  I can’t remember anything about it either, other than that I wanted the stupid school girls to hurry up shut up so I could watch their fantasy counterparts duke it out in LSD land.  The entire time I was thinking to myself how little sense the whole thing made, and how the two parts had absolutely nothing to do with each other.  But if the creators are will to smoke some more pot and make some crazy fight scenes, I may watch it.

6 – Natsume Yuujinchou Shi (S4)

No PV available

Synopsis – Natsume Yuujinchou is a light and cheerful anime adapted from the manga of the same name.  Since he was young, a teenage boy named Natsume Takashi has been able to see spirits, but keeping this ability a secret has now become a heavy burden for him and has made his life difficult.  This begins to change when Takashi inherits his grandmother’s “Book of Friends”.  He discovers that she, Natsume Reiko, shared the same ability as him and starts to understand why he was always targeted by both good and bad spirits.

Cholisose – The fourth season of Natsume Yuujinchou! This is one of my favorite anime series ever, so it goes without saying I’ll be watching this. The first season was wonderful, the second season spectacular, and the third season even better than that. It’s one of the most unique shows out there, and the protagonist Natsume is one of the best examples of strong, gradual character development in anime.  I’ll certainly be curious to see where the fourth season goes plotwise. There’s plenty of side characters who could return, including the elusive Seiji Matoba… What I would especially like though is to learn more about Natsume’s grandmother Reiko. Looking forward to it.

Notaku – I’ve only seen a few episodes of this show but if it has enough staying power to last four seasons, I’ll just go ahead and assume it’s pretty good.  But if I watch this I’ll have to marathon the rest of the show because I don’t really like to watch direct sequels without seeing the original.

7 – Inu x Boku SS

Synopsis – The Shirakiin house’s daughter, Shirakiin Riricho, who has a complex about being unable to live independently and unprotected, feels the need to move out and live on her own under the condition of residing in the mansion named “Ayakashi Kan.” In this mansion, only those who have cleared a very strict examination could reside in it, and for each resident, they are accompanied with one agent of the Secret Service (S.S.). Although Riricho has rejected the company of the S.S., while residing in the mansion she finds out that the agent dedicated to protecting her is actually the Fox Spirit whom she previously rescued.

Cholisose– I’m more on the fence for this one, but it sounds like it could be fun. What is confusing me though is the genre for this anime. I’ve seen things like “comedy,” “mystery,” and “supernatural,” but not “romance.” The plot description screams romcom to me. (Maybe it’s just a given?).  Browsing through the official site for this upcoming anime presented a variety of good-looking character designs, and the trailer reveals some decent animation.  But will this be geared to the Black Butler crowd? I’m worried if that’s the case. It’s based off a manga, and browsing through the first chapter of it, it gives me a bit of a Tactics vibe, oddly enough… I’ll wait for the first episode to see how I feel about it.

8 – Kill Me Baby

No PV Available

Cholisose – This is based on a four-panel comic, and it looks cute and funny. It’s about a schoolgirl and her friend, who happens to be an assassin. And that’s the whole premise. Should be amusing.  Not sure if this will be a five-minute show. I think it would work fine as one, though full-length episodes would be funnier, Azumanga Daioh-style.

Obviosly this is not the full line up of shows, so click here to view the full list.

Kyousogiga – DO Want (Dec. 10)

So, is there any reason I’ve never heard of this before?  Because it looks absolutely awesome.  I mean, God, just watch the PV.

So, essentially, Lewis Carol adopted the bastard child of Bakemonogatari and FLCL.  Fuckin’ A.

My God, I have not wanted to see something this much in a while.  But, I’m the type of person who pretty much eats up anything artistically creative, and with this and Nisemonogatari coming soon, I’m pretty much on cloud 9.  I can hardly believe this produced by Toei Animation, you know, the company that did stuff like Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon?  Odd, but I don’t think the results lie.

The only problem is that I can find absolutely no information about this.  There isn’t really much talk about it on forums, and the closest thing it has to a Wikipedia page is a footnote on “Through the Looking Glass”.  I don’t even know if it’s a series or not (though I highly doubt such an elaborate PV would exist for a TV series).  Well, whatever, everywhere I look it says, “Simulcast December 10” so it’ll definitely be on the internet soon, and that’s all I need to know.

C3 – Fear Kubrick (No relation to Stanley)

Okay, I don’t have any plans to talk about this show any more until it’s over, and I possibly review it, but….

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA LOOLOLOOLOOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!1!11!!1one11!!!!!!1eleven!!1!!  I laughed my ass of at this.

How to Film a Harem/Ecchi Anime

Above is correct

Is there anyone who does not appreciate this classic genre?  Harem anime create a world which has been proven correct time and time again, year by year; a world in which every girl craves the genitals of a single male.  Of course we all know this to be true, as we have witnessed it many times and it always plays out the same.  However, many aspiring harem anime creators have a hard time creating the conditions for such a scene to exist, so we have constructed a helpful guide to get you started on your road to adding to this wonderful genre!

Ideal lead

1. Your Lead – The lead for your harem should ideally be as generic as possible, this way he will appeal the the widest array of women.  He must not be proficient in any major field, save for academics or the rare case of athletics, and should be rather homely.  Your lead should be a kind and thoughtful person with a pure heart; this way it will be funnier when you incorporate the ecchi aspect of it.  He should also be rather clumsy, so he can have humorous erotic encounters with members of his harem.  Although some Harem anime have opted for a rather perverted young lad as their main character, we believe it is best to preserve this classic genre and use the former of the two leads.

2. Filming Time –  Although many people are unaware of this, the time in which a harem anime is filmed is very important in meeting the desired conditions of the show.  Every year there is a single month in which the animated female species is in rut.  This month changes from year to year, but meteorologist’s and psychologists’s team up every January to specify the month for the following year.  It is imperative to film your show during this time, as it is the means by which the women in your harem anime are seduced into liking your otherwise not-so-likable lead.  In order to spur things along with your lead and his harem, it is suggested you make any other males around the women complete idiots, pervert, or metro-sexual, or to remove all other males form the equation altogether.

The H-B magnets at work

3. Genitle Magnets – These are more important to the ecchi aspect of you show than to its harem aspect.  These are special magnets which attract a woman’s gentiles.  The first kind is the F-B magnet (face to bottom), this magnet will attract you male leads face to any female posterior if the fall in unison.  These are ideal for comedic purposes or to create tension between two of your characters.  The second type is the H-B magnet (Hand to Breast),  as it’s name implies, it will draw your male leads hand to any woman’s breast, assuming your lead falls onto a female.  This is also used for comedic purposes, but is more often used as a type of compensation for the rather underpaid lead actors of these roles.  These magnets can be ordered from H-Products Inc., and should be implanted into your male lead without his knowledge, before filming begins.

4. Location – As the classic saying goes; location, location, location!  The filming location is a very important factor in the success of your harem anime.  It should ideally be set in high-school, as it gives an excuse for the girls to wear very short skirts, and gives you and excuse not to show any nudity, as all of the actors will be underage.  Be sure to make sure any attractive girls are in the same class or homeroom as your lead.  Also make sure that there are several loose floorboards for your lead to trip over, causing a humorous ecchi scene.  Install cameras in the female changing room, as girls often like to grope each other and have underwear parties, which provides an excellent source of yuri fan-service.  Be sure to remove all looks from doors and have the females change clothes as often as possible, giving the male lead a greater change of accidentally walking in on them undressing.  Also, although Japan now discourages bloomers, it would be in your best interest to bribe the headmaster into reinstating them for your filming period.

Three objec- girls

5. The Girls – One of the most important aspects of any harem.  The girls cast for your show should fill a wide variety of personalities and character traits.  Although no set number is correct anywhere between 3 to 341 is ideal.  Your should incorporate a few of these types into your show:  the overly happy (almost retarded) girl, the loli, the tsundere, the sadist, the shy girl, the older-sister type, and the best friend.  These character archetypes offer an instantly recognizable image of a harem anime that is sure to bring viewers in.  The girls should all be okay with completely giving up their pride to chase after a nobody guy, and to be borderline molested if you are planning on doing an ecchi anime as well.  make sure they all have some type of sad back story to make them sympathetic and vulnerable to the male lead at some point during the show.

And there you have it!  You should now be well on your way to filming your own harem anime!  If you have any questions or trouble, please feel free to comment bellow and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

Mawaru Penguindrum – Ringo needs to die

Thank you, sir

Seriously, I think we can all agree this bitch needs to die, as she has done nothing but mess shit up the entire series.  Firstly, there is no way in hell any sane minded person would spend more than 5 seconds around her if they know how she actually was, and if you personally knew the object of her desires, you would tell him as soon as you could.  Not only does Shoma help this psychopathic bitch in her crazy fantasies, he absolutely refuses to just take the damn diary for whatever reason.  This bitch tried to rape someone, RAPE them, and would have if she didn’t mess up the ruphie dosage in Shoma’s drink.  And then after Shoma knocks her off as she’s mounting her passed out victim, he saves her crazy ass from being hit by a car.  And when the guy wants to have sex with her she won’t?  Bullshit, sirs.  She’s a fucking failure at life, lost the diary, blames Shoma, and needs to drink some anti-freeze or something.

And if she and Shoma somehow become a couple (because she apparently likes him, and he very obviously want to put his dick in it) I swear to the Holy virgin Mary I’ll have to kill something.

ZOMFG Nisemonogatari in January, so PLEASE license Bakemonogatari!

Holy SHIT, YES!!!!!!!!  Time to bust out some hallucinogenic drugs, and get ready to pause the video a lot, because Nisemonogatari will be creating visual orgasms in January of this year!!!!!  I have absolutely no idea what this series is about, other than that it has to do with Araragi’s sisters I guess.  I don’t know whether it’s a sequel, prequel, or spin-off, but I don’t care.  After all, it IS Shaft, and it IS related to Bakemonogatri, so it’ll be awesome whether you want it to or not.

Of course seeing that it’s been almost 4 years since Bakemonogatari was aired in Japan my hopes of it ever being licensed continue to fade away.  Yes, the the show is VERY Japanese, a lot of the humor and wordplay is lost in translation, and it’s really weird.  However, based on it’s popularity, I think it’d sell just fine.  But then again, maybe it’s popularity is the issue; it may be to expensive to get the rights to, and no one wants to take a risk on such an odd show.  But who cares, Nisemonogatari exists and January can’t come soon enough.

Fall 2011 Anime

The new anime season starts in October doods.  I’m sort of glad, because I don’t have too many shows that I know I’m going to watch every week, besides Mawaru Penguindrum and No. 6, so hopefully I’ll find something in the new season I can really stick with too.

Mashiroiro Symphony –

Yes, it’s the generic harem anime required by law for each season for the rest of eternity.  Some generic guy is sent as a specially selected trial student at an all girls school that is beginning to combine with his old school.  Shockingly he meets a bunch of girls there who, oddly, all don’t instantly want his penis, However, most other harem anime have claimed this to not be the case, as we all know that girls all crave dick.

Guilty Crown –

Christ, people are all about some Guilty Crown for whatever reason, maybe because it sounds like a new Code Geass or something.  For whatever reason people I know are going apeshit about this show, and the PV looks pretty damn good so I’ll check it out.  Guilty Crown is a totalitarian government type thing that takes place in 2039, and follows Ouma Shu.  He somehow gets involved with a resistance force that’s fighting the government, as is standard in totalitarian works.

Last Exile: Fam the Silver Wing –

Awesome, more Last Exile!… oh, it’s just a spin off.  Yes, unfortunately this has absolutely nothing to do with Last Exile and is and all new story set in the same world.  Well, it’s Last Exile, so we’ll all watch it anyway.  This show is about a girl named Fam and her navigator Giselle, who were both made fun of so much for their names they stole a vanship and ran away.  No, not really, but there isn’t really a whole lot of information about it, except that their vanship is named “Vespa”, so hopefully we’ll get to see some bass guitar head smashing.

Persona 4: The Animation –

Hells yes, grab some fsteak and get ready to talk about MURDERS!  Oh, soooooo many Hiimdaisy jokes to make, but the time for that will come later.  I’m sure most people have played P4, or have at least heard about it, as it’s one of the best games on one of the best systems ever, the PlayStation 2.  Persona 4 is about “you” as you move to a new town to stay with your uncle while your parents are away.  While there, a string of murders occur and you and your friends discover the means of the killing; a world inside the TV.  So, because everyone knows that police fail at everything, you and your party set out to stop any more deaths.

Shakugan No Shana: III –

Is this show really that popular?  How can you even have a third season? There were two seasons, OVAs, a movie, and now a THIRD season?  What else is there?  Yuji picked Shana, that’s the end, Yoshida loses and has to settle for Ike.  Right?  Lord, I don’t know, I can’t even find any information on the plot of this,  but I’ll have to watch  it just to see what bullshit they can make up to squeeze more life out of this series.  Shana, you are no Evangelion.

Fate/Zero –

I’ve never watched all of Fate/stay night, and people claim I deserve to die because of this.  However, I’ve also heard people say that it’s really overrated, so I just never took the time to finish it.  Fate/Zero is prequel to Fate/stay night and is supposed to show what happened in the 4th Holy Grail War that made all that shit happen to Shirou.

Obviously, these aren’t all the anime that will be released in the fall season, just the ones that I’ve heard about that seemed noteworthy.

Here’s a full list

Stupid Shit in Anime – Eden of the East

Bitches don't know what the hell we are!

Oh, Eden of the East, why must you end up in this category?  Well, maybe it’s just because I like the series so much that this one part pisses me off as much as it does. In either the second or third episode Takizawa is driving his motercycle around and comes to a giant fucking hole in the ground where the Missiles hit the ground.  He walks to the edge and, like, swan dives of the broken road into the crater (completely unharmed by the way) and is gangbanged by a bunch of skeleton looking things that he calls “Johnny”, obviously due to the shows obsession with penis.  The show never, EVER, explains what these things are, obviously it’s a hallucination, but why does he have it? Is it because of the mind wiping thing, or what?  Neither movie feels the need to explain this shit either, and something similar happens again in the second movie, yet it is never explained, never mentioned again in the series.  Also to make things even what-the-fuckier, the dick chopping lady carries one of these things of when she turns into a crow, or whatever, and blows up the windows in the hotel.  Goddammit, plan shit out before you do it.
